Your Big Island Home

Enjoy your stay in paradise in our modern private screen house floating in the embrace of three spectacular monkeypod trees (‘ohai in Hawaiian).  Located 45 minutes south of Hilo in the Puna district, Hale ‘Ohai  is an elegant sanctuary...

  • a place to rest and reflect,

  • a place to gather for special occasions,

  • a place from which to explore and discover the Big Island of Hawaii.

It’s like living in a work of art.

I love the bedrooms, so intimately connected with the outdoors, yet so private. And, I love the outdoor showers!

Come visit soon!  This is not the side of Hawaii where pristine white sandy beaches are dotted with mega-resorts and crowded with tourists.  That’s a 2 hour drive away (well worth taking at some point during your stay if you like that sort of thing.)   Instead, Hale ‘Ohai is on the Big Island’s east coast, 40 miles south of Hilo, and 10 miles north of where the lava is now flowing in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  Enjoy the nearby clothing optional black sand beach where dolphins spin and frolic with hardy swimmers, hike to the lava by moonlight, snorkel at the tide pools, swim in the geothermally heated warm pond, indulge in a watsu massage.  Dine out or come home to Hale ‘Ohai, a modern architectural gem designed by award winning architect Craig Steely, (Craig calls it Lavaflow 4 on his site) where you’ll find a fully equipped kitchen and and your choice of dining counter or Noguchi table.  (Don’t miss the spread in Dwell Magazine’s November 2008 issue!)  Take in the view of the monkeypod tree canopied garden as you relax in the screened living room with 2 full-size firm sofa beds or on the sun drenched 500 square foot deck just outside the porch doors.  As the sun sets, you’ll be ready to spiral down the lava-red staircase to your choice of two king size master bedrooms where you can have your own island dreams.  Serenaded by coqui, sleep in comfort on memory foam mattresses and 500 thread count sheets.   At sunrise, awaken to bird song in the kipuka, then start your day Puna style: a warm outdoor shower, yoga on the lanai, a walk to the beach, and a cup of hot tea or freshly ground and brewed coffee.
